Moments of Quiet Peace

Sometimes a moment is so beautiful you want to try to preserve it: to make it last. Sometimes I find myself trying to do that with a poem.

Below are some words I wrote looking out of my window one evening. I love those moments when the evening is softly, gently cooling down, and the quiet peace I find there. It soothes me, and reminds me that God is still God. Even though this world is very messy, I know His hand holds it all. I know that those who trust in Christ as Saviour and follow Him as Lord have a deep reason for peace, because all is ultimately safe in His hands when we know Him.

Song

From my window, Gatley

Clear and cooling, still and strong,

Evening creeps across, along,

Neath the moon, so fair; so calm:

The singing of the birds’ sweet song.

All is well. The air is cool.

I breathe in peace. The evening still.

Trees wave slightly. Evening falls.

And still the soothing birds sing on.

Peace so gradual cloaks the earth.

Deep comes gently. Sleep has birthed.

Cars purr softly. Lights spring soft.

Even city birds sing on.

Far above, a gentle tree

Perched all safe, a nest; so long,

Neath the quiet, watching moon:

Beauty muted, yet so strong.

The evening lovely soothes my soul

Through the window, breathing all

Of the joy. Creation’s God

Fills the birds with joy-filled song.

The world can speed: the speed rush on,

It cannot quench the thrill so strong

That comes from knowing my wise God.

His goodness thrills the birds to song.

“While the earth remains,
Seedtime and harvest,
Cold and heat,
Winter and summer,
And day and night
Shall not cease.” Genesis 8:22
